You think being a night owl is cool. Research says it's not

Hello and welcome back everyone! Your friend Prabhasini is back, and I know most of you are dying for the board exams to end - so that you can have that most desired holiday - rather cuddle up your favourite cushion or pillow cover and get some deep long sleep. Well, the entire time have been strenuous for board examinees, so you deserve a grand sleep after all.

Hey wait! But what about those status updates that you missed. What about your 1 am friend who have been waiting for so long to talk to you. What about your midnight story books - your book markers are waiting to march ahead. What about the late night movies. What about the so many things which our life wants - especially while the world is expected - To Sleep.

Who cares to sleep - isn't it. We would love to tell ourselves - ek hi to zindagi mili hai ( We have got just one life as this ). So, shouldn't we be enjoying every bit of it. And, look at so many celebs we are fan of - they are so successful and they do not sleep either. Further, do we not tease our friends or classmates and adage the name - Kumbhakaran to people who love to sleep more - sleep longer. And what about this beautiful physique of ours. What if over sleeping makes us gain weight - flabs and what not. Our great good looks would be spoiled.

Many of you might think in the lines above. Or you may have your reason to avoid sleep. What's the big fuzz after all!

Well, Research across the world conducted by various bodies time and again to resolve the mystery called - sleep and dreams have proved these following benefits of sleep which you might be forgoing by curtailing your sleeping hours -

1. Memory is important - and students across the globe would acknowledge this fact as all of them have to write their exams wherein they have to memorise the points -  or atleast keep in mind the ideas on which they have to write their answers. If this CPU of our system looses power or 'hangs' because we are overloaded with huge information, we will loose our processing speed - hence our ability to process and retain. Sleep helps us learn our stuff better - while we sleep our brain processes and organises the information for us and something happens which helps us learn and retain better. So, lack of sleep will not allow space and time for your brain to do thus.

2. Sleep can improve our longevity as it helps refresh our minds - brings down stress - and thus, many glands function well. After the day's function many of our cells get damaged. And, they need healing and repair. Sleep does exactly that for us. It also helps us recover from the day's activities and gives us the energy to welcome a bright new day in our lives.

3. Sleeping  7 - 8 hours a day acts as a great vaccination which isn't painful at all. While we get adequate sleep research says that our body builds and boosts our immune system. While we sleep the entire nutrients consumed during the day could be directed to the real needs within our system - and that's the time when our body builds up its immunity.

4. Sleep is a creativity booster. And, a mood enhancer too. Whatever you do - right from being a designer to finance professional to marketer to software programmer - sleep being associated with the inner or subconscious mind fuels up your creativity and enlivens or rejuvenates your mood for a new day.

5. Many people make mistakes when they are fatigued. Road accidents due to lack of sleep has gained momentum - as many turn to become unmindful due to lack of sleep. Depression sets in and alcohol and drugs abuse are also attributed to lack of sleep. And, research has proved these as well that sleep makes the mind alert and fit and doesn't allow depression to set in. Not so easily.

6. Dreams during sleep have a great relation to our lives. Dreams, apart from being the mirrors of our subconscious minds, have been scientifically proven to hold important messages for us. And, often, they are shields for us to sleep better and uninterrupted. So, we not only get to know what is actually going on in our subconscious mind, we also get important clues which we might be looking for but unfortunately might be missing out.

So, you see, sleep does have a huge impact on our lives. A good sleep can not only boost memory but also make us strong and healthy by improving our immunity. And, also give us clues and important messages through dreams.

Therefore sleeping 7 - 8 hours daily is not an option rather, a necessity.

And, in order to celebrate and embrace sleep, the world celebrates sleep on 16th of March.

So, happy sleeping.
