Hello and welcome back, dear Chaibuddies!

Today marks the beginning of our journey exploring various universities around the world, complete with reviews, facilities, campus life, and more. Our goal is to provide valuable insights to assist you, dear Chaibuddies, in your pursuit of higher education abroad. To kick things off, let's delve into the renowned National University of Singapore (NUS).

Before we start, while you are sipping to your cuppa beverage, would you love to share it's warmth with me? You could do the deed by getting me an Amazon Gift card or buying me an item off my Amazon wishlist. With that being said - let's start with our journey today!

Overview:

Nestled adjacent to the Kent Ridge subzone of Queenstown, Singapore, the National University of Singapore (NUS) stands as a venerable institution with a storied history dating back to its establishment in 1905. As one of the oldest autonomous institutes in the country, NUS has garnered international acclaim.

Getting There:

For those arriving at Changi International Airport in Singapore, multiple transportation options await. The most economical choice is the subway, a journey taking approximately an hour and a half. From the Changi Airport Passenger Terminal Building (PTB), namely PTB-1, PTB-2, or PTB-3, you can board a bus heading to various transfer points, including:

  •  Paya Lebar Station (Exit D),
  • Tampines Station,
  • UOB Tampines Center, and
  • Bef Khatib Station.
These transfers lead to different subway lines (example: yellow circle line), eventually connecting to Kent Ridge. Be mindful, though; a 20- to 30-minute walk from Kent Ridge is required, so this option suits those with manageable luggage, like a trolley bag.

Alternatively, if you're burdened with luggage, especially during your initial arrival, taxis are available at a cost ranging from $25 to $45, offering doorstep delivery to your campus. Notably, all taxis in Singapore accept credit cards.

Depending on your circumstances and affiliation with the university, you can also inquire about the free pick-up and drop-off shuttle services offered by NUS, planning your commute accordingly.

University Culture:

NUS offers a distinctive educational experience that harmonizes its Asian heritage with a global outlook, prioritizing student growth and readiness for the future. The university is acclaimed for its rigorous academic programs, fostering innovation and entrepreneurship, and promoting experiential learning. It offers a wide range of degree programs across various disciplines, encompassing sciences, medicine, dentistry, design and environment, law, arts and social sciences, engineering, business, computing, and music, among others.

Interdisciplinary studies are highly encouraged, enabling students to cultivate a comprehensive knowledge base and adaptable skills. During their NUS journey, undergraduates engage in a quest for knowledge and inquiry, guided and inspired by eminent thought leaders who nurture critical and creative thinking while fostering collaboration among peers. With mentoring from professors worldwide, students are well-prepared for both industry and academia, should they choose to pursue master's degrees.

NUS underscores its commitment to global education through diverse overseas programs. These expeditions, varying in duration, expose participants to a spectrum of economic landscapes and societal challenges, providing first hand insights into diverse cultures and lifestyles. Highlighting NUS' transformative approach to global education are specialized programs that enable students to pursue multiple degrees concurrently, including Concurrent, Double, or Joint Degree options, either exclusive to the university or in collaboration with esteemed partner institutions worldwide. These offerings greatly enrich an undergraduate's global perspective.

Graduate Studies:

At the master's level, NUS' graduate programs are meticulously designed to instil a profound passion for exploration and equip students with the skills to confidently and innovatively address intellectual challenges. NUS provides a diverse array of graduate programs tailored to cater to various interests, including:

  • Doctoral degree programs, primarily research-oriented and preferred by students seeking in-depth knowledge and relishing creative problem-solving, with aspirations for esteemed positions within their respective fields.
  • Master's degree programs, structured to prepare students for professional practice (typically through coursework-based Master's) or to master a specific subject area as a foundation for further doctoral studies (typically through research-based Master's).
  • Graduate Diploma programs, offering specialized professional training in niche areas, favoured by students seeking additional exposure to specific interests without committing to extended, long-term studies.

These programs offer exceptional opportunities for students to nurture their potential as intellectual leaders, setting the stage for diverse and rewarding career paths.

Global Community:

NUS proudly hosts a diverse community comprising students and faculty members from around the world. The university's faculty members enjoy international acclaim for their research excellence across numerous disciplines. They have established collaborative research initiatives that transcend geographical and disciplinary boundaries. Some of these collaborations even offer students the unique opportunity to pursue a jointly conferred Ph.D. degree, or participate in International Competitions which are a testament to NUS' commitment to global education.

Student feedback:

After examining reviews from students on popular platforms like Quora and Masters Portal, a recurring theme emerges - a predominantly positive view of their university experience. Both current students and alumni express high levels of satisfaction with the university's facilities. These facilities encompass a wide range of aspects, including hostels that encourage co-learning, robust support for extracurricular activities, a diverse array of student clubs to participate in, well-equipped research facilities, opportunities for international exposure in both academic and extracurricular realms, and much more.

Numerous Indian students specifically note that they encountered minimal difficulties in sourcing vegetarian dining options, medicines, everyday grocery items, and personal care products.

In general, students perceive the campus and its surroundings as safe, creating a sense of home away from home. Students from various faculties, particularly those in Arts and Finance, report highly positive experiences during their studies at NUS. The field of Finance, in particular, stands out for its success in terms of internships and job opportunities after graduation.

However, a significant number of students do voice concerns about the cost of living at NUS, with many finding it expensive. Additionally, not everyone appreciates the intensely competitive atmosphere at NUS, with some students noting that it can occasionally become overly competitive and potentially toxic. Some students also express reservations about the rigor of the workload, finding it strenuous and challenging at times.

Work life:

For individuals employed at NUS, insights from Glassdoor reviews indicate a generally positive work environment, ample research resources, and opportunities for international collaboration. Many employees highlight the helpful and friendly nature of their colleagues.

However, there are areas of dissatisfaction as well, particularly concerning salaries, career advancement prospects, and bureaucratic processes that can be cumbersome. Some remarked that early in their career it is a great place for learning, but one must have plans to move elsewhere to progress faster in their later years.

So, guys, that's all in our discussion about NUS. Let us know your views about this blog and this university. Currently, I would be signing off, preparing for a new blog. I will greet you Chaibuddies in my Next.
