Corporate job or Academic profession or civil service – Part 2

Hello and welcome back! Thanks for your waiting and now lets delve into the topic - of choosing your career directly once again.

Continued from the previous issue where I shared in depth year-wise career planning about the engineering students today I will focus entirely on Commerce students.

If Commerce is your subject in graduation and you are fussed about what to do next - this will help you decide and focus.

For the First year : Congratulate yourself upon getting admission to a college. And, with BCom as a degree - you will be ready for a wide arena of careers in the various verticals of the govt. Well, if you haven't taken admission out of your free-will but on compulsion due to various reasons life had to offer - well, take a deep breathe and relax. Life had granted a boon in disguise. Just you need to strike and strike the magical lamp offered to you for the gin to come out at the end of the three years and miraculously transform your lives.

How -

Step one - love your subject. Remaining frustrated is never going to help you anyway. Acceptance - not compromise, has the potential to solve wide variety of problems. And, accept this by preparing yourself and experiencing the wide realm of commerce. Just tell yourself - I am here because destiny put me in and my destiny wants me to shine in a different way with an illumination of my own type.

Step two - Know your first year subjects. Atleast the names and the content-in-brief of every subject.

Next - refer to Internet-buddy and google out what are the career avenues available for a commerce graduate. The options would be many, trust me. Jot them down.

Next - make a tally of the subjects offered in your BCom syllabus ( consider entire 3 years ) with the entry criteria of the jobs you jotted down. Try to match them in such a way so that one particular subject caters to many career areas. This step is also going to help you decide upon the specializations later.

Finally - tally these with your interest areas. Now say that you aren't at all interested in any of these. That's pretty fine. Keep this list with you. And, while studying, do the matching. You will surely find a way out. And, if somehow your curricula failed to cover any specific skill you wanted, you can get an assessment of that and learn it from other resources.

Now suppose you have enjoyed commerce in 12th. Then, the most effective thing for you to do apart from delving into the world of theory available is to get an internship. You will be prepared not just theoretically but practically as well. Also, seek internship in the govt sector as there are plenty of them. You would have a fair idea of the functioning of various departments of the countries and you can decide if you wish to apply for govt. jobs or not and if you do - which area you wish to work for.

For the 2nd year - Continue with the steps mentioned in the first year. Now that you have two more years after which you would either have to continue studies or look for jobs - keep this in mind.

One - the entrance for you could be to get into MBA or 3-year LLB or MCom. And the job exams you can appear in your 3rd year would be for banks - IBPS and SBI or for UPSC or SSC or some other central govt. exams.

Make a note of the common ground of preparation for the entrance tests and job exams. Start preparing for them as then - your preparation would be faster and easier.

Two - Make sure where your passion lies. By now - you would have a fair idea or even a rough one about where you wish to proceed. Atleast you would know - which subjects you happen to like and where can these lead you to in your career-graph.

Third - Prepare prepare and prepare. As this would lead to the key of success. Further, if somehow you didn't happen to get any professional experience, strive to get an internship.

For the final year - kudos for having completed most of the journey. For the remaining, plan smart. You have done all the hard work - assessed your career goals and interests following the above steps, and now you know where your interest lies.

One - if you wish to get into the banking sector - do plan and prepare as that can help you get into it. But an advice - do not be lured into a career in banking just because of a secured job or high pay or because everyone else is doing it. Because with the kind of strategic job assignments bank would offer as you progress in your career or the enormous competition to get into the banking industry - if it is not your passion you would sure be in for a  heartbreak sooner or later.

Two - if you wish to be in academics - chill while others do the rush. Go into MCom. The role of professorship awaits you. If you wish to be in academics but are business oriented - get admission into MBA. You can still be a professor with a unique grasp of commerce and industries. Also these two could help you get into corporate roles as well. Before you step into corporate sector, do get to learn from people in these areas regarding how the life in the corporate sector is for them.

Three - if you feel you love the corporate world - but neither the govt. job nor academics grasps your interest and somehow you are more inclined towards the legal tenders then, pursue LLB. It is a very lucrative option to pursue LLB after commerce and many with interest in these areas have really good living.

So, now I guess the people in commerce will be really happy to have so many choices. After all the subject principles upon which the entire country and industries worldwide run is indeed an area of importance. And, equally important are people - you who is pursuing it.

Well, that's all for now. The people in arts - do stay tuned for the next issue, where career in the arts field would be discussed. As of now, Stay healthy, Stay happy and Stay safe till we meet next.
