My face to the world : My Resume

Hello and welcome back. So, following my last article about internships, I hope, all of you have had a great and busy time searching for internships. And many might be extremely happy, thinking about the jingling sound their pockets will produce at the end of the month. And, why not! After all, its your hard earned - rather first ever hard earned money, from a mini office.

However, I also know, that some of you might still be pondering upon, what exactly goes wrong with your application each time, that despite the toil of searching and applying, your friend gets something what you desire. Many might even be feeling jealous. Many might begin to blame their stars.

But trust me. It's not your friend's nor stars' fault. It's just your resume, which is making this difference. Just as you need to make-up in order to hide the flaws in your skin, and / or look presentable, you also need to spice up your resume, to be appealing to recruiters. So, pour a bucket of cold water on your smoke-emitting ears and boiling hot head (pun intended - not expected to be followed in real unless you wish to beat the summer heat ), and get set to polish up, your face to the entire recruiting world - which is your resume.

Now, first of all, keep in this in mind. You need an unique resume. But, you do not need a resume, which might grab every attention, true, but which might resemble your scrap book, or craft chart. Indeed you need a beautiful resume. But, do not make your resume look like any art work. Here beauty lies in the way you structure your resume. It's uniqueness lies in the manner in which you convince your recruiters to schedule an interview with you, in order to asses you further.
Keep in mind - the sole aim of your resume is to grab an interview opportunity.

In order to do these, here are some useful tips to be kept in mind -

 1. You might follow the templates given in the internet. But, never copy. It gives a negative impression regarding lack of originality in the applicant.

2. You might refer to millions and millions of career objectives and hobbies and resume information mentioned in the internet, for the sake of how to write them, as you would be doing it for the first time. But, stick to your own style of writing. And, never copy their sentences. Plagiarism is a strict no no.

3. Divide your resume into segments. Highlight each segment heading in bold and / or underline. Say, begin it with your name, address, email id and mobile number. Next, mention your profile summary. In this segment, tell about the person you are in brief, highlighting the reason why you are applying for this role.

4. After your profile summary, choose to mention either your skills or your educational history. Here, make use of bullets and list them in points, instead of paragraphs, in order to grab attention. Recruiters receive thousands of applications for a single position. At times, they might even use softwares to  scan through applications. Using bullet points will make sure your points are read through.

5. Next, in case you have any work experience, mention that. If you happen to be a fresher, please make sure to mention the projects that you have undertaken throughout your schools and colleges. These donot usually include class assignments. But, you might state them, in case they have been really significant. The purpose here is to give a practical example of your skills both interpersonal and subject related.

6. Thereafter, mention your hobbies and extracurricular activities and achievements. Although, the position you might be applying for is solely academic, these activities gives recruiters an idea regarding other traits of your personality. So, be honest, and be careful, while mentioning these.

7. Finally, do add references. These not only provide a means of verifying identity, rather, these also provide a way of getting an idea regarding your acquaintances. But, just for the sake of status building, never include names you are not familiar with. It might lead you into trouble later on.

And, all these must follow a pattern, so that your overall resume looks symmetrical. For instance, maintain the same font format for the body and headings respectively, throughout. The size too, should be same, giving a visual symmetry. And, use bold or italics to highlight points in between.

And, beware. In this world overwhelming with people who would provide services for a cost, you might think, and be made to believe that it is impossible to write your own resume. They might do it for you. But, they are doing it for the rest as well. It might turn up, that you and the applicant sitting next to you carry the exact replica of resumes. This, will give an impression of inability to even contemplate ones basic and prime responsibility like drafting your resume.

And, in this world of networking, a negative impression takes nanoseconds to spread like a virus, thereby, ruining your reputation altogether. You certainly do not wish this. So, take some time, and draft your own resume, yourself.

Wishing you all the best with your efforts. Stay tuned, for my next blog.
