Moving back to college? Here's your friendly packing guide suited to your dormitory | Part - 1

Hello, My Dear Chai-buddies!

As campuses reawaken after their summer slumber and eager undergrad sophomores embark on their new academic journey, there's one essential aspect we cannot overlook - preparing and packing for your dormitory room. Having experienced dorm life myself, I feel equipped to offer you valuable insights on this topic. Though I could easily write a book about it, let's keep it concise for the blog space and cover the key points in two parts. Today, we'll focus on those venturing into dorm life for the first time, especially in a new city or country, who may feel a bit lost about what to expect. Fear not, for we are here to help you create your ultimate packing list!

1. Familiarize Yourself with Dormitory Guidelines

The first step to preparing for packing list is knowing - what would be provided to you and won't be and what you would be allowed to carry and what you wouldn't. For example, my dormitory provided for a lot of bedding items including pillow, pillowcase, blankets, mattresses with covers, bedsheets etc. with the option to change them every week! Also, ironing units were provided. We weren't allowed to have any electric cooking devices in our rooms like electric coffee maker or microwaves however. But the dormitory provided them in the kitchen of every floor, so practically that wasn't even necessary (to carry it secretly either, hehe!). The dormitory also provided curtains for windows. Each room had a mirrors installed in it, so, I didn't carry one with me.

Therefore, the first step of beginning your packing list is to thoroughly understand what are the guidelines laid by the dormitory concerning what you would be provided and what you can and cannot bring. This will help you a lot in smart planning.

2. First Aid box

Now that you have familiarized yourself with the dormitory guidelines, it's time to prepare a mini first-aid kit. Unexpected incidents never send prior invitations; they simply arrive unannounced, much like unwanted guests at our homes 😜. Therefore, it's crucial to be prepared with a handy first-aid kit at all times. In a new place, you might not find all the familiar items you are used to, or you may not even know the local names for certain products. Carrying your first aid toolbox with you will always be a lifesaver.

Here's some ideas on what you should include in your mini first-aid kit:

  • Band-aids
  • Gauze
  • Cotton
  • Plasters
  • Medicine for indigestion or digestive disorders
  • Paracetamol
  • Aspirins
  • Cleansing wipes (include some alcohol-free and some with alcohol)
  • Disposable sterile gloves
  • Safety pins
  • Antiseptic cream and a mother tincture
  • Skin rash cream, like calendula
  • Cream or spray to relieve insect bites and stings
  • Thermometer

Ensure that you consult a doctor and obtain prescriptions for any medicines you carry, including ayurvedic medicines and herbs, as they may be checked at airport immigration security.

Tip: If you don't have prescriptions for your ayurvedic medicines, as they have been home remedies passed down through generations in the form of roots, leaves, or shoots of plants (e.g., giloy, turmeric roots, ashwagandha, neem, cardamom, cinnamon, etc.), you can pack them along with your spices and avoid classifying them as medicines to avoid any troubles.

Remember, you don't need a huge box for your first-aid supplies. Opt for a small, handy kit that can be easily stored in your luggage and later in your cabinet without occupying a lot of space. With this mini first-aid kit by your side, you can confidently handle unexpected situations and focus on making the most of your dorm life experience.

3. Essential Clothes & accessories - not your entire wardrobe

Fashion choices are up next! Ladies, remember that the famous phrase, "I have nothing to wear out of a fully over-stuffed cabinet," won't cut it here. It'll only lead to unnecessary headaches for you and your wallet due to the high extra-load charges airlines impose per kilogram beyond the permissible limit. So, let's start by asking ourselves some important questions.

First and foremost, consider the weather in your new place. Instead of solely focusing on how stylish a dress may be, think economically about how suitable it'll be for your new environment. Will the dress be appropriate only for university classes, or can you also wear it to attend formal university events? Can your casual attire also serve as comfortable loungewear at home? Be sure to pack sufficient and suitable undergarments like bras, pants, briefs, etc.

Next, do some research on the prices of certain items at your destination. For example, are snow-boots, jackets, or other specialized clothing cheaper and easier to acquire there? If so, it might be more convenient for you to purchase them after arriving. On the other hand, if such items are expensive or hard to find, consider carrying them from home.

Now, let's talk about laundry facilities. If you won't be living in a single room and the dormitory authorities don't permit clothes to be hung for drying, you might find your clothes being worn by someone else without your knowledge! This may happen if you leave your clothes for washing or hang them to dry in shared facilities. Although you can't prevent these occurrences entirely, you can reduce the risk. Opt for clothes made of fabrics that dry quickly, as the shorter the time your items are left unattended, the lower the chances of such incidents.

A tip for you: Carry your raincoat and umbrella. And in addition, have a set of shawls, scarves and a monochrome dress. It helps!

With these questions and considerations in mind, take notes of your answers and pack accordingly. By being well-prepared and making thoughtful fashion choices, you'll not only avoid unnecessary luggage hassles but also ensure that you have a comfortable and enjoyable dorm life experience. Now, let's move on to the next important aspect of your dorm packing list!

4. Familiar Hygiene products.

Upon arriving at your new place, it's essential to be prepared for every situation, including that time of the month for all the ladies reading this blog. Picture this: you've forgotten to carry your sanitary napkins, and for those traveling overseas, finding them can be quite a challenge. The language barrier or the availability of different menstrual products like tampons or menstrual cups instead of something more familiar to you like sanitary pads can leave you in utter shock.

To avoid such a predicament, it's best to pack your hygiene products in advance. Make sure to include sanitary napkins, disposable bags including vomiting, toilet seat sprays, paper-soaps, sanitizers, paper towels and any other menstrual essentials you may need.

Here are some valuable tips to help you manage during your journey:

  • Long Haul Flight Precautions: If your periods are due during a long-haul flight, don't worry. You can ask the flight attendant for sanitary napkins, as they are often provided onboard. It's a good idea to request a few extra napkins, just in case.
  • Carry Extras in Your Carry-On: Keep some extra pairs of underwear and sanitary napkins in your carry-on hand baggage. This way, you'll have them readily available, even if your checked-in baggage is delayed.
  • For the Guys: If you're planning some adventures, it's wise to carry condoms with you. It may be easier and more affordable to have them from your home country rather than buying them at your destination. Just be discreet about it if needed.
  • Perfumes and Deodorants: Perfumes and deodorants are often cheaper in your home country, especially for travellers from places like India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Vietnam, etc. If you have specific brands you prefer, it's best to pack them in your checked-in baggage to avoid unnecessary scrutiny at the airport.

By preparing in advance and carrying your essential hygiene products with you, you'll ensure a more comfortable and stress-free transition to your new place. These small but crucial details will help you focus on settling into your dormitory and embracing the exciting journey ahead.

5. Spices.

For those of you coming from India, Bangladesh, or any other Asian country, where spices are an integral part of daily life, adjusting to the availability of spices in your new place might be a challenge. You might be surprised to find that some people haven't even heard of turmeric, a staple spice in many Asian cuisines! Instead, you might be recommended pre-packaged masala powders like Everest or MDH as curry powder by locals. However you might be totally averse to these packaged stuff and prefer your cardamom, cinnamon, anise, cloves, turmeric, cumin, asafoetida, fenugreek, curry leaves etc., your way in your various proportions in variety of dishes, not just for the taste but also for the health benefits they offer.

Spices are not just for satisfying your taste buds; they can also act as preventive medicines, household aids and skincare. For example, moving to a dry climate from a warmer place might lead to skin and hair issues, but a mixture of turmeric and honey can work wonders in soothing your skin and hair while preventing hair fall and itchy skin. This natural remedy often gives better results compared to over-the-counter lotions. If you encounter cockroach problems in your dormitory rooms, neem leaves can come to the rescue. So, one indispensable advise - carry your big spice box with you. And carry them in good quantities, as you might need this stock to last at least a semester or more before you can re-stock your boxes with fresh supplies from home. Spices would not be used just for cooking, but for many other things as well.

6. Travel friendly skin-care cosmetics.

In the glamorous world of celebrities, it's no surprise that many iconic figures like the Kardashians, Priyanka Chopra, Rihanna, Katrina Kaif, Masaba, Deepika Padukone, and others have ventured into the realm of makeup, launching their own cosmetic lines. As fans, it's tempting to be drawn to their products and show our loyalty, but before you pack your cosmetic range for your new adventure, there are some important factors to consider.

First and foremost, take into account the climate of your new destination. Will you be living in a predominantly sunny area where you'll be exposed to sunlight for most hours of the day? Is it a dry or humid climate? Understanding the weather conditions will help you choose products that suit the environment and cater to your specific needs.

Look for multi-purpose cosmetics that can serve multiple functions. For instance, you might find a product that acts as both a moisturizer and a sunscreen, providing protection from the sun while keeping your skin hydrated. Similarly, some foundations can double as skincare products, nourishing your skin while providing coverage. Streamlining your cosmetic collection with multi-functional items not only saves space in your luggage but also reduces your makeup routine, making it more efficient and time-saving.

Avoid carrying an excessive amount of cosmetics, as some products may not fare well in the new climate and could even get damaged. Instead, focus on carrying sufficient quantities of products that are compatible with your new environment. Consider investing in travel-size versions or transfer your favourite products into smaller containers for convenience.

Additionally, prioritize essential skincare items like cleansers, moisturizers, and lip balms to keep your skin healthy and glowing. Choose makeup products that are long-lasting and suitable for extended wear, as you may have busy days exploring your new surroundings.

Here's a comprehensive list of toiletries that you might need while traveling or staying in a dormitory:

  1. Toothbrush
  2. Toothpaste
  3. Dental floss
  4. Mouthwash
  5. Shampoo
  6. Conditioner
  7. Body wash or soap
  8. Face wash or cleanser
  9. Face mask
  10. Face moisturizer
  11. Body lotion
  12. Deodorant or antiperspirant
  13. Perfume or cologne
  14. Razor or electric shaver
  15. Shaving cream or gel
  16. Feminine hygiene products (tampons, pads, menstrual cup, etc. for women)
  17. Comb or hairbrush
  18. Hair ties or hair clips
  19. Hair styling products (gel, mousse, etc.)
  20. Hand sanitizer
  21. Sunscreen
  22. Insect repellent
  23. Lip balm with SPF
  24. Nail clippers

  28. Cotton swabs (Q-tips)

  31. Makeup remover wipes or liquid
  32. Compact mirror
Make sure that your cosmetics and toiletries range includes some or all of these items - either in multi-purpose form or individually. This isn't an exhaustive range though.

Remember, the goal is to curate a cosmetic collection that complements your lifestyle in the new place and makes you feel your best. With thoughtful planning and a focus on multi-purpose products, you can enjoy a simplified and practical beauty routine while embarking on your exciting journey!

7. Books and stationery.

Moving to a new place for university brings exciting changes, including opportunities to explore a wealth of knowledge. And books in any subject can be a great resource to acquire that knowledge. Also, for taking notes while attending classes, one needs stationery. For students from Asian countries like India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and others, one thing to keep in mind is that printed books and stationery in foreign countries can be significantly more expensive compared to their home countries. While university and public libraries offer a wealth of reading materials, there may be times when you need specific reference books to keep with you for an extended periods. And purchasing them might be very expensive option.

During my time, I was fortunate to have access to free printing facilities in my dormitory, which saved me the trouble of carrying heavy books from home. I utilized this service when needed, printing two pages per sheet, both front and back, to conserve paper and reduce the cost of buying new books. However, if printing options are limited, purchasing books can become quite expensive, along with other essential items like pens, papers, and calculators. To manage this, consider bringing essential books and stationery with you, as they are crucial for your courses.

Now, if you are unable to bring books due to their weight or because you would be living in a shared space and you fear that they would be stolen or damaged, here are some additional tips for you.

  • E-books and Digital Resources: Instead of carrying heavy printed books, consider purchasing e-books or accessing digital resources provided by your university's library or online platforms. E-books are often more affordable and convenient to carry on a laptop or tablet.
  • Second-hand Books: Look for second-hand bookstores near your university or explore dormitory networks or online platforms where students sell or exchange their used books. This can significantly reduce the cost of buying textbooks and reference materials.
  • Library Access: Make the most of your university's library facilities. Borrow books for required readings or reference purposes and return them when you are done. Most university libraries offer extensive collections that cater to various academic disciplines. In fact, as student you might even obtain free membership in public libraries where you might find valuable books at better terms to keep them for reading. And at times, they conduct donation camps for stationeries as well.
  • Stationery Bulk Purchase: If you need to buy stationery items like pens, notebooks, and calculators, consider purchasing them in bulk or during sales to get better deals. It might be more cost-effective than buying them individually. In many countries they have really generous discounts during Easter or black Friday.
  • Sharing Resources: Connect with other students from your country or similar academic backgrounds. You can consider sharing or exchanging books and stationery items with them, reducing the need for everyone to individually buy everything. In fact, you might even be able to procure items from your home country, by placing your orders with them.
  • Online Shopping Platforms: Using services like Amazon or Shoppre can be a great way to buy books and stationery items at lower prices and have them shipped to your new address. Compare prices from different online platforms to find the best deals.
  • Use Digital Notes and Organizers: Reduce paper usage by taking digital notes and using organizational apps on your laptop or smartphone. This will not only save stationery costs but also help you stay organized and easily accessible.
  • Renting Books: Some bookstores or online platforms offer book rental services, allowing you to rent textbooks for a specific period instead of buying them outright.

So, plan your usage and pack accordingly. This way, you can manage your luggage weight efficiently while managing space in your dormitory room as well.

8. Storage units or bags.

Check out in Amazon

Storage units or bags are indispensable tools for mastering the art of space management in dormitory rooms, especially those shared with other students. When living in a confined space, being organized and efficient with your belongings becomes crucial. Here are some storage solutions that can make dorm life more comfortable and clutter-free:

  • Hanging Closet Organizers: Packing your clothes with hangers on can save valuable space in your suitcase. Hanging closet organizers with multiple compartments allow you to store clothes, shoes, and accessories neatly, making it easy to access and find what you need. These organizers can be hung in your wardrobe or behind your door, maximizing vertical space and keeping your belongings off the floor.
  • Foldable Storage Boxes: Using foldable storage boxes can help you optimize the space inside your suitcase while keeping your belongings sorted. These boxes come in various sizes and shapes, making them ideal for storing clothes, books, stationery, or any other essentials. Once you reach your dormitory, you can repurpose these boxes as organizers inside your cabinet or under your bed, helping you keep your room tidy and clutter-free.
  • Toiletry and Shower Bags: Waterproof toiletry bags are essential for organizing your personal care items and you may consider packing your toiletries and cosmetics in them. These bags not only protect your toiletries from spills while travelling, but also come with multiple compartments, enabling you to segregate and find your items easily. Moreover, having a shower bag that can be hung in the shower room ensures that your toiletries are always within reach, saving space in your shared bathroom and making your daily routine more convenient.
This way, you pack your storage solution along with you as well!

9. Some quick food and snacks mini-packets.

When transitioning to a new university, it's important to consider having convenient and nourishing food options readily available. While exploring local cuisines can be exciting, having familiar and easy-to-prepare meals can offer comfort and convenience during busy study days and while adjusting to a new environment. Despite suggestions for fast food like McDonald's or Burger King, many students, including myself, often feel fatigued during their initial days at the dormitory. During this time, they seek a quiet place for reflection, making it essential to carry some hassle-free and quick-to-make food and snacks.

Oats and sattu are excellent choices for nutrition. Oats are packed with fiber, protein, vitamins, and minerals, making them a healthy breakfast or snack option. Sattu, a traditional Indian superfood, provides abundant protein, fiber, and essential nutrients, offering sustained energy and nourishment. Additionally, jaggery powder, a natural sweetener, serves as a healthier alternative to refined sugar while being rich in iron and other minerals. These items combined along with your spices can serve as convenient meals whenever you feel lethargic or wish to save time and money by avoiding elaborate cooking.

Moreover, don't forget to pack mini packets of snacks from local vendors, such as khakra, bhujia, bhel muri mix, potato fries, chikli, kodubale, potato or banana chips and mini packaged samosas. These snacks not only fill your hunger but also evoke nostalgic feelings, adding a touch of home to your dormitory experience. Ensuring you have these food items with you while packing for your dormitory will help you maintain a sense of comfort and ease during your university journey.

Pack them inside containers in which you can also store them at your dormitory, if possible.

10. Carry your Hobby

When embarking on your university journey in a new country, don't forget to bring along your hobbies! Your hobbies are not just a source of leisure and relaxation, but they can also be practical and versatile tools during your time abroad. Here's why you should consider packing your hobby kits:

  • Personal Relaxation and Stress Relief: Moving to a new country and adapting to a different culture can be overwhelming at times. Having your hobby with you can provide a sense of familiarity and comfort. Whether it's knitting, crocheting, painting, or any other creative pursuit, engaging in your hobby can be a great way to relax and de-stress after a long day of classes or exploring your new surroundings.
  • DIY Creations and Personalized Decor: Hobbies like knitting and crocheting offer endless possibilities for DIY projects. You can create beautiful storage containers, utility items, or even handcrafted gifts for friends and roommates. These handmade creations not only add a personal touch to your dormitory space but also serve as functional and aesthetic additions.
  • Clothing Repairs and Alterations: Carrying threads and needles with you can be a lifesaver when it comes to quick repairs of clothing. Accidents happen, and having the ability to mend torn seams or fix small damages on your clothes can save you from the hassle of finding a tailor or buying replacements.
  • Musical Instruments and Sports Equipment: If you have a passion for music or sports, consider finding effective ways to bring your guitar, rackets, or any other beloved instrument or equipment. Playing the guitar or engaging in sports can be an excellent way to connect with new friends, join clubs, and participate in recreational activities on campus. If you find that bring it right from your country is adding extra weight, try finding out students traveling from your place to your destination. And then, it might be possible to combine your weights together.
  • Fostering a Sense of Community: Bringing your hobby to a new country can also be an opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals. You may find clubs or groups on campus that share your interests, allowing you to bond over your hobbies and make new friends who share similar passions.
  • Productive Use of Free Time: University life often comes with moments of free time between classes and study sessions. Having your hobby kits with you ensures that you can make productive use of these intervals. Whether it's a few minutes of sketching or a longer session of playing an instrument, your hobbies can enrich your university experience and provide a sense of fulfilment.

Before packing your hobby kits, be mindful of any restrictions or regulations regarding certain items in your new country. For example, there may be guidelines for carrying sports equipment or musical instruments on flights. Additionally, consider the weight and size of your hobby supplies to ensure they fit comfortably within your luggage allowance.

Ultimately, bringing your hobby to a new country allows you to maintain a sense of identity, creativity, and joy during your university adventure while also providing practical benefits for daily life.

12. Documents along with organizer

When embarking on your journey to a new country for university, one of the most crucial aspects is ensuring that you have all your necessary documents with you. From essential identification papers to academic records, having these documents in order and organized is vital for a smooth transition and successful university life. Here's why you should bring your documents with an organizer:

  • Passport and Travel Documents: Your passport is your primary identification while traveling abroad. Keeping it safe and easily accessible in an organizer ensures that you can quickly present it at immigration and other official checkpoints. Additionally, organizing your travel documents, such as visas and boarding passes, minimizes the risk of misplacing any vital papers during your journey.
  • Insurance and Medical Certificates: Health and travel insurance are crucial for international students. Having your insurance policies and medical certificates organized in one place allows for easy reference in case of emergencies or medical needs. This way, you can swiftly provide necessary information when seeking medical assistance.
  • Academic Records: Academic transcripts, certificates, and admission letters are essential documents for your university enrolment and future academic pursuits. An organizer keeps these papers safe and well-preserved, preventing them from getting lost or damaged during your travels.
  • Dormitory Allotment Letters and Accommodation Details: These documents provide information about your university housing and accommodation arrangements. Keeping them in an organizer ensures that you have quick access to your room assignment and any necessary contact details.
  • Submission of Assignments and Coursework: Some universities require students to submit assignments and coursework in transparent organizers or clear plastic sleeves. Bringing these organizers with you ensures that you have the necessary stationery to meet university requirements without having to purchase them at potentially higher costs in a different country.
  • Easy Retrieval and Organization: Having all your important documents within an organizer means you can quickly locate the specific document you need without sifting through multiple folders or loose papers. It also helps you keep track of any new documents you receive during your university journey.
  • Peace of Mind: Traveling to a new country can be an exciting yet nerve-wracking experience. Knowing that your essential documents are well-organized and secure can provide you with peace of mind, allowing you to focus on your studies and enjoy your time abroad.

When selecting an organizer, opt for a durable and water-resistant one that can withstand the wear and tear of travel. Consider using labelled dividers or color-coded sections to further categorize your documents for easier retrieval. For assignments, bring in some A4 sheets along with transparent document organiser. By bringing your documents with organizers, you are proactively ensuring that you have a hassle-free and well-prepared start to your university adventure.

13. Electronics and Gadgets

When preparing to move to a new country for university, one of the crucial aspects to consider is ensuring you have all the necessary electronics and gadgets. These devices play an essential role in your daily life, helping you stay connected, study effectively, and keep yourself entertained. Here are some key points to keep in mind when packing your electronics and gadgets:

  • Universal Chargers and Adapters: Different countries often have varying types of electrical outlets and pin sizes. To avoid any charging mishaps, invest in a good quality universal charger and a set of travel adapters that can fit various outlet types. These adapters will allow you to use your devices seamlessly without worrying about compatibility issues.
  • Laptop and Accessories: Your laptop is likely to be one of your most important tools during your university journey. Make sure to pack it securely with a padded laptop sleeve or bag to protect it from damage during travel. Additionally, carry any essential accessories such as a mouse, external hard drive, and laptop lock for added convenience and security.
  • Smartphone and Accessories: Your smartphone is your lifeline, keeping you connected with family, friends, and classmates. Remember to pack your phone charger, power bank, and any necessary cables to keep your device charged on the go. It's also a good idea to bring a phone case and screen protector to safeguard your phone from accidental drops and scratches.
  • E-Reader or Tablet: If you're an avid reader, carrying an e-reader or tablet can be a space-saving alternative to packing physical books. This device will allow you to access a vast library of digital books, articles, and academic resources, making your studies more efficient and eco-friendly.
  • Mini Portable Lights and Lamps: Dormitory rooms may not always have adequate lighting, especially if you share the space with roommates. In addition, your roommate might not have the same timing preferences as your - you are a morning person, while they are night owls. Consider bringing a portable desk lamp or clip-on light to ensure you have sufficient illumination for studying or reading or getting ready to go to lectures or elsewhere while others in the room are asleep. The foldable stand options are the best for travel.
  • Noise-Cancelling Headphones: Dormitories can be lively and noisy environments, which might hinder your concentration while studying. Noise-cancelling headphones are a valuable addition to your packing list, providing you with a quiet space to focus on your academic tasks or unwind with your favourite music or podcasts.
  • Camera and Accessories: If you enjoy capturing memories through photography or videography, don't forget to pack your camera and any necessary accessories like spare batteries, memory cards, and a camera bag to protect your equipment.
  • Power Strips: Dormitory rooms often have limited electrical outlets. Bringing a power strip will allow you to charge multiple devices simultaneously and make sharing outlets with roommates more manageable.

Remember to label your electronics and gadgets with your name and contact information, as well as keeping them safely stored in your carry-on luggage during travel. This way, you can ensure that your essential devices arrive safely and function smoothly throughout your university journey in the new country.

14. Safety kit

Traveling to a new place and living in a dormitory for the first time can be an exciting adventure, but safety should always be a top priority. As you embark on this new chapter in your life, it's essential to take precautions and be prepared for any unforeseen situations. While we hope for the best, having some safety devices at hand can provide peace of mind and empower you to handle potential risks. Here are some safety devices that you may consider carrying to ensure your well-being:

Pepper Spray: Pepper spray is a non-lethal self-defence tool that can incapacitate an attacker temporarily. It contains a chemical compound derived from chili peppers that causes irritation in the eyes, nose, and skin, giving you time to escape from a dangerous situation. Compact and easy to carry, pepper spray can be your first line of defence in case of an emergency.

Personal Alarm Keyring: A personal alarm keyring is a small and discreet device that emits a loud, attention-grabbing sound when activated. It can startle and deter potential attackers or alert others around you in case you need help. Many personal alarm keyrings also come with a built-in flashlight, which can be handy in dimly lit areas.

Spy-pens or Hidden Cameras: While it's crucial to prioritize personal safety, having spypens or hidden cameras can also provide an additional layer of security, especially in shared living spaces. These discreet devices can record audio and video, which might be helpful in documenting any unwanted incidents or intrusions.

Multi-tool or Swiss Army Knife: A multi-tool or Swiss Army Knife can come in handy for various situations, from opening packages to minor repairs. However, be mindful of the laws and regulations regarding carrying such tools in your new country, as some places may have restrictions on certain types of blades.

While it's essential to have these safety devices, always remember to familiarize yourself with the laws and regulations of your new country regarding the possession and use of such tools. Additionally, take the time to educate yourself about the local safety practices and emergency protocols, so you are well-prepared for any situation that may arise. Your safety is of utmost importance, and being proactive in safeguarding yourself can make a significant difference in your overall well-being during your university journey.

15. Carry your utensils

Check out here: https://amzn.to/43xH1Rf

Carrying basic utensils such as cups, plates, and cutlery can be highly beneficial when moving to a new place and living in a dormitory. Here's why it's a good idea to have these essential utensils with you:

  • Convenience and Independence: Having your own utensils allows you to enjoy the convenience and independence of preparing and enjoying your meals without relying solely on the shared kitchen facilities. You can make your favourite beverages, enjoy a quick snack, or even prepare simple meals in the comfort of your dormitory room.
  • Hygiene and Cleanliness: While the dormitory may provide communal kitchenware, using your own utensils ensures cleanliness and hygiene. You can maintain control over the cleanliness of your eating and drinking tools, ensuring that they are thoroughly washed and sanitized to your standards.
  • Personal Preferences and Dietary Needs: Carrying your utensils gives you the flexibility to cater to your personal preferences and dietary needs. You can choose the sizes and types of cups and plates that suit your requirements, whether you prefer a larger mug for your morning coffee or a specific plate size for portion control. Additionally, if you have specific dietary restrictions or allergies, using your own utensils minimizes the risk of cross-contamination from shared kitchenware.
  • Adaptability to Different Meal Settings: Your own utensils come in handy when you want to enjoy a meal outside of the dormitory, such as picnics, outings, or gatherings with friends. Having a set of plates and cutlery allows you to easily pack and enjoy meals on the go, without having to rely on disposable or potentially flimsy utensils.
  • Cost-effectiveness: In some cases, purchasing utensils in your new location might be more expensive than bringing them from home. By carrying your basic utensils, you can save money and avoid the need to buy new ones upon arrival.

Remember to choose utensils that are durable, lightweight, and easy to clean. Opt for reusable and eco-friendly materials like stainless steel or BPA-free plastic to minimize environmental impact. Additionally, consider packing them in a compact and secure manner to avoid any damage during transit. You can in fact pack your food items and spices inside these utensils or even your clothes inside them so save space while packing.

Having your own cups, plates, and cutlery provides you with a sense of familiarity and comfort in your new living environment - especially when you are new and do not know the markets well yet. It allows you to maintain your dining preferences, ensures hygiene, and adds a touch of personalization to your dormitory experience. So, don't forget to include these basic utensils in your packing checklist for a smooth and enjoyable transition to your new place.

One very important tip: Carry your plastic mug with you for washing yourself if you happen to be from India, Pakistan or Bangladesh as some toilets may have just a flush and the toilet may not have a basin or tap attached to it. In some places, the toilets and bathrooms might even be separate rooms making it an uncomfortable experience for you without water if you aren't used to it!

So, my dear Chai-buddies, in these 15 points we have covered most of what you should be packing for your first ever dormitory adventure. Hope this gives you a good starting point to work on your packing list for your new journey ahead. All the best! And stay tuned for next.
