Interview Insights - and why even you could reject to work for your boss.

Hello and Welcome back! I - your friend Prabhasini is back again, and today we would discuss about a very important topic which is very crucial in every students' lives and that is - Interview Insights.

Have you ever given an interview and felt - hope I could have been more diplomatic in asking this question. Have you felt that your interviewer was literally an over imposing a person and either too demanding or too dominating. Did you feel like you are practically lost regarding what to answer. Did you feel you shouldn't have come up or you should have prepared more. Or you felt the person interviewing you is a bit more like interrogating you and what he says is pretty contradictory to either the job description or to his own views. Or may be it's your first ever interview and you are very nervous.

If any of this is you do read on. When your Prabhasini is here, why fear! Having had interviews with HR members and also my own experience here is a compiled suggestion for you to rely upon that would ensure success for sure.

Well, the first thing - if its your first interview, here are a few things to keep in mind.
If its your first interview, it's natural to feel nervous. Embrace that feeling. People do get nervous even after having years of experience. But, good preparation can sure make you win. How - well here it goes.

You do need to be sure regarding what kind of an organisation you are going to join. If it's a startup or a corporate house or a subsidy of a large firm or a firm itself. Next, you need to know what kind of business they are into. It should be done properly so as to have an idea regarding the person you would be talking to.
If it's a start-up company, chances are that the person taking your interview would be your supervisor rather than being any HR member. So, chances are 50:50, i.e. they might know the nuances of how to conduct an interview or they might not know anything about it at all. For them - hiring might be blasting off the candidates with loads of questions without any time constraints and the intention might seem to be to screw you up literally. Well, there are two ways to tackle this. You have to understand if the person doing it is actually - Intentionally doing it or is it a way of stress-test.

Well, often the job you would enter would involve lot of stressful work and it might be a way to know if you can handle pressure. And ways to know this are - if it is done intentionally in a bid to leave you - you might be asked pretty absurd questions of which some might even be an indirect attack on your very credentials and self. And, then, the interviewer would end up swaying from topic-to topic and speak all rubbish if you are still able to answer him properly without getting nervous.

Here a tip from HR members - even if it's your first interview, do not feel that a rejection in the first interview would mean a rejection for life. Often what happens is - people either fear of loosing their post to a potentially more capable candidate, who could be trained to become even better than them or people have someone else in mind, who they wish to hire. In these cases - one has to learn to REJECT the company as well. Because even after knowing all these, if you still risk getting into such an organisation, the reality check - life is going to be a hell on earth for you as this person can go to any extent to make your life miserable and belittle you. And, you would not really cherish a first experience that way, would you.

If the interview is a stress interview, it would have some link to real life stress that you would likely face in your job. Although there are many ways of surprising the candidate, yet, they will never sway from topic-to-topic and speak all rubbish if you tackle the questions with confidence and satisfactorily.

And, you should learn to figure out which is a test and which is deliberate as this will help you in your future deals as well, wherein you will have to pick up ques from the communications that you have with your clients, distributors, dealers etc.

Next, you might have an interview and the interviewer might give you an entirely different account of what you are expected to do from whatever is mentioned. In that case, do refer to the description which motivated you to apply and tell them that its these skills that are relevant to you. If picking up new skills isn't any issues, then, let them know that you would need to be trained and get an account about how at all you would be trained by them. But, make sure you get everything in writing then, as a thing which happens once, might repeat again.

If you feel that the person is asking questions which are pretty personal and he or she or the job has got nothing to do with it, take this tip - You May Choose Not to Answer. Refuse politely and remind them that this has got nothing to do with them or the work.

If you feel unprepared or lost during interview - then in this particular case - it is recommended that you do prepare for your interview well the next time - combining both the subject matter and other things like how would you present yourself and what answer would you give for particular kind of questions. Your communication skills have to be groomed up. If need be, you might attend classes which trains you for interviews. YouTube has a vast resource along with MOOCs for this purpose.

And finally, during interviews, try to know the best about what to expect in a regular work day from your employer, how do they consider promotions, when would your salaries be paid, when and how you get a pay raise, the work hours, the number of people who would make a team, the team culture etc.
Make sure that you ask the right questions too, as interview doesn't mean just getting questions from the recruiter, it also consists of asking. And while some questions can be raised directly, some would need some tact in raising them in the interview - which would be combination of way you ask and time of interview you ask.

This will help you know a lot about if you would fit or be able to train yourself to fit into the organisation style.

Remember - your first interview will have a lasting impression - for those recruiters who indeed wish to hire. Many might propagate that recruiters don't get paid to reject - which is true indeed, but the fact is - all interviewers are not HR managers and all recruiters are not paid to hire YOU. Why would you be valuable for the company and how is something that you will have to establish. And if you find something as a direct insult to your dignity - a piece of advice is BEWARE. Adjusting might mean a huge unjustifiable compromise to make here, which you can potentially avoid.

You might think that what if I do not get further interviews. Trust me and the economy - which rapid changing strides everywhere - if you have a good resume which highlights learning new skills continuously, you will get job calls for sure. Because the reality is not that there aren't many jobs - reality is that there are jobs and many new ones are being created but not too many qualified people for them. So, loosing one wouldn't mean loosing the entire game.

Keep hope. Polish your resume and skills. Prepare well for your next interview and get selected for a job that you enjoy.

That's all for now. Stay tuned till next time. Till then, Stay Happy, Stay healthy, Stay Safe.
