#Poem-3 - Winter in Present times

Hello and welcome back!

This is the 4th in series and 3rd poem, chosen from the submissions of Christmas Carnival.

Winter in Present times

- by Gurupada Chakraborty

The chilly wind
Blows across the balcony
And tic-tac
It drizzles along.

On my table beside the window
I sit for studies;
Giving out a large yawn.

Who wishes to care for semester
In this pleasant alluring winter.

If only the fog ceased to be deadly-
If Dilli would be pollution free,
With a wind-cheater over my back for sure,
I would have embraced the weather - oh! so lovely.

I would have walked down the streets of Chandni-Chowk
To gorge some yummy golgappas,
And with sight as sharp as hawk
Would have measured the quantities of masalas-
Would have a bitter-sweet deal
with chacha Iqbal or bhai Anil,
Yet at the end-would have got away
With an extra piece or 5 rupee less, so to say.

Or, would have caught up with aunt Bhatnagar,
And had a ladies time together.
Talk-gossip-get tips-and shop,
In the lanes of Lajpatnagar -

Where both would have put our skills to test,
Better get a good bargain than paying high.
Then compare with the other -
If lost, receive a jest.

But now, do we really dare
to do all these.
Hasn't our hearts been seized by fear.
What if we bargain and o' dear!
We hurt a male ego.

What if they teach us - 'a lesson'.
- A lesson for life.
Even if greet a grey Dilli -
Can we really afford to stain us - can we really...

Dilli hai Dilwalon ki
Yet this dil has sunk far beneath,
So much that it has estranged
even our own kin and kith.

The winter now seems as if
it has really set in
- Spreading it's lifeless gloom all around.
This is the real winter rein.

If only things could have been altered -

Who would have cared for semester
In this pleasant alluring winter.

Mr. Gurupada Chakraborty is an AGM with State Bank of India, who is really passionate about poetry. This poem was his response to the high levels of pollution in Delhi and also the increasing crime and atrocities against women in the capital city.

We all thank him for being a reader of astudentinsider, and sharing such a wonderful piece with us. We encourage him to continue with his poetic journey, and also look forward to receiving more such poems from you.
