We will examine the (cost-)effectiveness of an online self-help intervention that has been developed in the context of http://www.depressiehulp.be as compared to a brief face-to-face intervention in these mothers. The current vacancy is situated within this trial.

As part of your PhD you will:

2) Image of humanity@work

About the Project:

You will conduct an academic research project and write a PhD thesis within the field of work-related perceptions of human nature and implicit theories in HRM. You will focus on how assumptions about human nature or the “human image” can influence the relationship between an employee and an organization, as well as the extent to which employees differ in the proactive work behavior(s) they exhibit in their job and in their career. Implicit theories comprise assumptions and mental models that influence how people understand the world and take action. There are various images of humanity that can coexist and interact, and they may all have an impact on individual level organizational behavior. We want to study (i.e. test and contrast) for instance the impact of a traditional, humanistic, positive, social, rational, and altruistic human image. We want to study the extent to which employee proactive work behavior depends on (1) how humans are perceived and treated within the organization, (2) what human image or implicit theory about HRM employees personally adhere to and (3) how the shared human image/implicit theory within the organization aligns with an employee’s individual perception. We thus want to contrast the implications of holding different assumptions regarding human nature. Studies may take the form of surveys and vignettes studies as well as in-dept interviews. The precise development of the project will be done in constructive consultation with the doctoral candidate throughout the four-year project. Funding is guaranteed for four years. However, the promoters work closely with the doctoral candidate to attract further funding for this project.

As part of your PhD, you will:

  • Working proactively on the several steps of the project (e.g., literature review, data collection, data analysis)
  • Writing scientific papers with the aim of integrating them in a doctoral dissertation.
  •  Active participation in (international) seminars and conferences;
  • Completion of the PhD program of the Faculty of Economics and Business (see: https://feb.kuleuven.be/research/PhD/businesseconomics/Business
  • Provision of teaching support in courses of the academic faculty (e.g., supervision of master's theses, supervising and grading exams).

Apply if your Profile matches the following:

  1. You hold a master’s degree in applied economics, Economics, Psychology, Social Sciences, Behavioral Sciences, or a related discipline.
  2. You obtained at least 2 ‘honours’ (e.g., cum laude, distinction) over the course of your higher education.
  3. You are intellectually curious and are interested in the topics of work-related perceptions of human nature and proactive work behavior.
  4. You have experience with or strong interest in designing and executing quantitative and qualitative research.
  5. You are well organized and capable of taking initiative and working independently.
  6. You have good writing skills and are fluent in English and speaking in front of an audience does not deter you (e.g., presenting at a conference)
  7. You are an analytic thinker with a proactive, self-directed approach to work.
  8. You are also willing to invest in your personal development.
  9. You are committed to Open Science, Research Ethics, and Responsible Research Practices.

4) Unraveling the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the bidirectional sleep-pain link

About the Project:

Chronic low back pain (CLBP) with and without insomnia is a highly prevalent and debilitating disorder characterized by huge socioeconomic burden. Sleep disturbances contribute significantly to CLBP severity and have a bidirectional relationship with chronic pain. This project will fill a critical knowledge gap by unraveling the underlying neurobiological brain mechanisms of this sleep-pain link in CLBP patients compared to pain-free controls with and without insomnia. We hypothesize that altered glial and neural brain mechanisms are linked to increased pain severity and sensitivity in response to acute and chronic sleep disruption. The effect of experimentally induced acute insomnia will be studied with a randomized controlled crossover study in CLBP patients and pain- free controls. The impact of chronic sleep disturbances will be assessed via a cross-sectional case-control study in CLBP patients and pain-free controls with and without chronic insomnia. We will address our hypothesis by uniquely and ambitiously combining cutting-edge methods in neuroscience (PET-MRI to assess glial activation and neural responses to painful stimuli), pain (quantitative sensory testing to measure pain sensitivity and endogenous pain modulation), and sleep medicine research (ecologically valid sleep disturbance protocol and sleep assessments). Such research is urgently needed to develop effective and novel treatments for CLBP and insomnia that target the involved neurobiological mechanisms.

The main objective of this innovative research project is to gain fundamental insight into the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the sleep-pain relationship in CLBP patients. We will examine the effect of experimentally induced acute insomnia and chronic insomnia on pain and pain sensitivity and assess hypothesized underlying (glial and neuronal) brain mechanisms in 2 work packages using cutting-edge pain, neuroscience and sleep medicine methods. As such, this project will elevate sleep-pain interaction research in chronic pain beyond the state-of-the-art.

Apply if your Profile matches the following:

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated candidate with master's degree in a relevant discipline (medicine, psychology, neurosciences, biomedical sciences, rehabilitation sciences, or equivalent).  Final-year students who will have obtained their master's degree by July 2023 are also encouraged to apply. Assistants in psychiatry can also apply. Candidates have a genuine interest in the interaction between bodily, psychological and neural processes, pain and sleep. Besides excellent organizational and experimental research skills, the candidate should possess excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills, both in English and in Dutch. Strong academic writing skills are a prerequisite. You are very motivated to work with patients in a research setting and are very interested in data-analysis. As the PhD student will work with patients, candidates must master the Dutch language. If Dutch is not your native language, an ERK level C1 is expected. Experience with sleep and pain measurement and brain imaging are an asset but not a prerequisite.

5) Stress regulation in children with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities

About the Project:

The project’s main aim is to unravel the role and mechanisms of stress regulation in children with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (PIMD). First, the way in which these children experience sensory stimuli and respond to them, as well as how these contribute to their general stress level will be studied. Secondly, it will be evaluated in which way high quality interactions which are attuned to the needs of persons with PIMD can diminish their stress levels. The third aim is to test the association between stress levels and stress regulation on the one hand and the children’s general wellbeing, engagement and problem behaviours on the other hand. Data will be collected in 50 children with PIMD in real life situations. Data on environmental stimuli, staff’s interaction style and behavioral indicators of stress will be collected through continuous video observation. A physiological indicator of the child’s stress will be registered with an Empatica E4 wristband. Wellbeing, engagement and problem behavior will be measured using questionnaires from the professional caregivers. More knowledge on this topic can lead to the development of targeted interventions to reduce stress regulation problems in persons with PIMD and can give practitioners more insight in how to adapt the environment and their interaction styles to accommodate the person’s stress levels. The PhD student will be responsible for the further elaboration of the design of the study, data-collection and -analysis, and reporting the results.

Apply if your Profile matches the criteria:
  • You have a master's degree in educational sciences, psychology or an equivalent and relevant degree, or you will obtain that degree before 1st October 2023
  • You are enthusiastic, driven and eager to learn
  • You are interested in the development and care of people with profound and multiple disabilities.
  • You are self-managing and have a sense of initiative, but you are also a team player. \You are good at organizing and planning.
  • Experience with research involving people with disabilities (research internship, research project) is a plus.
  • You are willing to embark on a PhD trajectory.
About the Offer terms:

We offer you a position as a full-time PhD student, starting at the latest on January 1, 2024, for a period of 4 years (provided a positive evaluation after 12 months). As a PhD student, you will end up in a stimulating, international research environment.
