Hello and welcome back everybody. And, I hope by now, many of you would be gradually gearing up for winters - December is soon to arrive. And, that means for many - you have unpacked your winter wears and opened up your storages and almost everyone of you might have felt - overwhelming.
Why?
Well, it's indeed very common for almost every women and a significantly increasing number of men in the world over, to look at their over-stuffed cupboards and sigh exclaiming they have nothing to wear. Despite this, with easy access to our cash and excellent credit facilities available, we seldom thing twice before making another purchase - only to frown later due to lack of storage space.
And, many people often report that they have so much more than required in their lives that they often fail to recognise their own stuff. After first few uses, they probably haven't noticed the item again. Ironically, despite such materially filled lives, these people are still complaining that they don't have anything in their lives.
Why?
Probably that happens because - We often have so much in our lives that stuffs aren't put to proper use at all and, the goal of our lives shift from using the stuffs for our benefit to acquiring as much of the stuff as possible. But - take a pause here. Ask yourself - are you a garage, a basement or a warehouse to store goods.
Well - not really, and neither is your house - your home sweet home is a warehouse for items. Then, what is the point in overdoing it.
An insight obtained from primary research of my circle of friends and their friends, family and extended family and some close acquaintances comprising a total of 350 members reveals the following :
60% of the group revealed that the reason for over-stocked was they used too much more than required. It happened due to the following-
a)Buying more stationery on discounts and sales, which later goes unused. Often, the copies which could have been reused are discarded, leading to waste generation.
b)Buying more appliances for the same purpose, just because of an attractive sales pitch or offer.
c)Impulsive buying of dresses and jewellery.
d)On the pretext of making lives easier, surrounding oneself with lots of gadgets.
e)Status symbol esp. with stock of imported items.
From the remaining, 30% said their lives were overstocked because, they couldn't let themselves say goodbye and discard something which they no longer used. They firmly held to the notion that they might use it someday or the other.
The rest said, their lives had adequate quantity and nothing was more.
A closer look at the last group revealed a behaviour pattern that these were the people who had the habit of recycling the usage of goods. Instead of buying a new vase from the market, they advocated building one from the resources they had. And, this group also complained less about waste generation. Further more, they were happy and satisfied with their lives.
Taking a cue from these findings, I figured out that it is indeed important to celebrate 17th November or Use Less Day. And here is how one can do it -
1) Make a list of all the items you have with yourself. This is indeed a very important audit one should make.
2)Now, make three lists - a. Items you use daily b. Items used occasionally c. Items never used
3)List down your everyday uses.
4)Now, from the 3 lists, figure out what are the tasks you can accomplish, without the usage of the stuffs. Here, make room for decorations of your home and use discarded or wastes.
5)Finally, you are left with the items which didn't find place even in your recycle plan. Instead of merely throwing them away, you can do two things with them -
a. Donate them in a charity. What isn't required by you might be extremely essential by someone else.
b. Sell them online. This way your waste generates money.
And finally, heave a deep sigh of relief. Your life is decluttered. You will find a lot of space in your room and home for sunlight and creativity, by Using Less Stuff, indeed.
Stay tuned till the next. Till then, Stay healthy, happy and safe. Good bye.
