We are all awaiting Christmas and it's high time now. Most of the schools would declare holiday soon. And, all we wish is to get our homes - festive ready. After all, we not only wish to enjoy in our most precious place in this world, we also wish to bask in the warmth of our cozy compartment. With winter spreading her wings by and by, we wish to play with our sensory instincts in order to feel warm, and evade the grey shroud. Or simply you might like a twist in the look of your room to get over with feeling monotonous.
Well, even your friend - Prabhasini happens to love her home and space a lot. So, after experimenting things myself and talking to a few interior decorators across my city, here a few tips that I am sharing for your room's makeover. Hope this will light up your spaces and bring a smile on your faces.
1. Winter comes with a prevailing gloominess. So, add warm colors to your home. These include - varieties of yellow, red, orange and green shades. May be, you could put bed-covers or curtains or table clothes with these color scheme. This is sure add color not only to your room, but enliven your mood as well. Make sure - you avoid the cold color scheme this season, as it would make you feel colder. For a detailed guide or getting tips on warm and cold color scheme, you may search over pinterest or simply google it up. Choose your pillow covers such that they reflect warmth, yet is matched with or in contrast to bed-sheet.
2. Your drawing room is going to be a place where you would meet your guests, spend time with family and friends. So, it needs to be groomed so that it matches with your high spirits and even add more fun to it. Clean up the entire room. Dust patches or cobwebs contribute to the gloom, so they should be removed, from the entire house practically. Once done, change the cushion covers, and insert new ones. A change often boosts up the spirits. Make sure you follow the color scheme while replacing cushion covers. You might choose to customize your cushions with embroidery or fabric painting. Maintain the color scheme. Embroidery or fabric painting further contributes to the warm feel of the room. Also, this will make you feel more happy to display your creativity.
3. Is gardening your hobby? Great! Winter plants are best ingredient to your home decor. You can choose from a wide variety of plants - from fruit to vegetable to flowering plants.
I used to grow the following in my granny's house every winter, until an year ago -
a. Pea plant
b. Broad Beans
c. Spinach
d. Carrots and
e. Beets
It added sufficient green cover to our homes, making us feel full of life, apart from serving organic stuffs to our kitchen.
Now, this year I have the following growing in one of my friend's balcony ( I chose my terrace first, but due to the problem of mites, had to choose a different location later on...) :
a. Primrose ( one of my favorite )
b. Aloe-vera
c. Orchids ( another of my favorite )
d. Banana sapling in her backyard, and
e. small Cherry plants, bought from the local nursery.
You can choose from these or find ones which suits your style and likes. Apart from adding to the green cover and giving fresh air, it also provides you with fresh choices without any fear of pesticides. It is also an engaging activity, which kills not only boredom, but also helps curtail the winter lethargy.
4. Now, you searched through the entire market, but never found that particular stuff, for which you were looking for. Or maybe you did, but not exactly the one you thought of. And, you might also wish to save your pocket money for a Christmas party. Well, winter is the best time to unleash your creativity. Here are a few tips that might be useful:
a. Change your doormat and rags. If you wish to make a new doormat, all it needs is a big rope ( of any color as you would choose or bamboo ropes ), an Youtube tutorial for - doormat with rope art - and exactly 5 to 8 minutes of your time. Yes, I have made two for my new home, and that's exactly the time I needed to make one. And, it is one of the easiest crafts to try your hands on.
b. Get a set of glass colors from the local craft store. You might be having extra plain plastic bottles or glass bottles or jars in your home. Draw or stencil over a design on it. Fill it with glass colors, and use it to make a lamp-shade. It would look stunning, as it would reflect your creativity.
c. Winter is a time, when a chilly breeze or wind blows often. And, you really feel like tugging yourself tight. Well, now you would love these the next time - with self crafted wind chimes. Yes, they are easy to make. I made one with leftover beads, buttons, decorated glass tubes, thread ( a lot of them ) and wooden rings. The chiming sound is so pleasant to hear.
5. Add rose or lime or lavender fragrance to your rooms. And, at last, make sure that nothing blocks sunlight from penetrating into your rooms. Bright sunlight will not only kill the dampness, it will also prevent several winter germs from thriving, thus preventing your appointments with cough and cold.
That's all for this time. Hope you have a good time with twisting your room's look. Stay tuned for the upcoming posts.
