Hello everybody! Your friend Prabhasini is glad to welcome you all once again into the world of student insider. So, most of you have got your results. And all of you are indeed anxiously awaiting college admissions. And those who have finished college are actively seeking jobs or preparing for higher studies.
And then, there are also issues like - which would be the most desirable career path for me.
Will something - like this stream or that - fit with me,
will I love doing it,
Do I have the skills for it, despite my great marks in mark-sheet,
What an office is like,
Are there other unexplored areas of my personality, which fits me better
And, the most important issue of all - I am Utterly Confused.
If this is you, please read on...
In a country like India, where the curricula, despite being upgraded, is still theory focused, it is really crucial at times to bridge gaps between theory and practical studies, in order to secure good jobs. Although a lot of colleges have imbibed the holistic route, by balancing both theory with sufficient practical studies, for a country of ever-growing population, these are extremely fewer in number to accommodate the huge student population. For the jobs like that of a philosophy teacher or subjects which are predominantly theoretical, it is sufficient to have a sound theoretical concept. But, for fields of science and technology, most field of commerce and arts, even including history and political science, research work and practical exposure makes your knowledge fully concrete.
And, although mini projects done at self endeavor is indeed, a great initiative, but, nothing gives the flavor of a real professional world like that of an internship. Almost two-thirds of students worldwide agreed to the fact that an internship not only gave them a taste of a real world office, prior to the actual office experience, it also taught them a lot of valuable skills, apart from developing their skill-set. And all these came in handy when they actually went to office as then, they could perform really well.
However, gaining an internship - which is actually far easier that gaining a job and can give you the sufficient experience required before applying for a job - can seem to be a tedious process. In order to do this task hassle-free, and most important - frustration free, please read on...
a: Internshala : Its a place where you get Internships that matter. Apart from internships, you also can get enrolled for their virtual training center programs to develop your skills. It has a wide coverage across almost all major cities of India, and also International internships are posted in a broad range of subjects to choose from. Indeed it is a great site, and really helpful too.
b: Let'sintern : With a start-up starting in a bedroom, to being judged by Economic Times as Power of Ideas and Nasscom among the top 50 start-ups to watch out for in 2010 and 2011 respectively. It has it all. And there is the reason of a huge range of internships across a variety of sectors, and it also includes established organizations apart from start-ups.
c: Twenty19 : Like Internshala, it is also a Chennai based start-up catering to the need of internships. There are training courses here as well. Check out for the discounts during summer or winter.
Apart from these, there are also career portals - like Linkedin and Indeed, which are considered to be job sites but are very valuable places to secure or browse internships. Linkedin is one of the most rich sources of all, as you not just open an account, but build a job portfolio here. It can help you connect with industry professionals as well apart from getting internships >> training >> jobs.
2. Now that you have the sites, you need to have a great resume to upload while applying for these internships. Remember, this is your first screening. So, make your resume such that it accurately tells - who the person you are.
But, beware. In a bid to get a great resume that stands out, donot copy it from the internet, and try to do it yourself, instead to getting it done. Of-course you may seek help regarding how to make one, but make that one yourself instead of shifting it on others shoulders.
And a crucial tip : do have industry or job focused two to three resumes. This will help you in applying to a variety of internships from different industries.
Wait for my next blog in How to frame - the Career Objective for freshers.
3. While applying, do check out completely what is written in the internship details. Often people tend to apply without even reading them, and later get frustrated by ending up in a wrong internship.
Here I would share another important tip: In many internships posted, you might find in the stipend section - Expense Covered. Do check out beforehand, what does it actually imply. It sometimes does mean that expenses as stipend would be paid only if you move, and you might be assigned a job which doesn't require traveling, thus rendering it an unpaid intern. If that doesn't bother you, its good. But if it does, save yourself from the bouts of sadness of giving up an internship just because you thought it to be a paid one and you actually needed a paid one.
Indeed its a deep topic, and I know, I do need to write another few blogs regarding resumes, and selecting the right internship, and the great interview day.
But, for now, I assume these will help you set up your accounts in these sites and get set for the next round, while I set up my next blogs.

- First of all, just like job protals, you also have places where you search for internships. Stick to maximum two portals, as per your choice and preference. Else you will end up juggling websites after websites, killing a lot of your valuable time.
